Akhilesh Yadav Criticizes BJP Over Madrasa Funding

Background

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has voiced strong criticism against the BJP-led government. This comes in response to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) recommendation to halt state funding for madrasas and madrasa boards.

Yadav’s Accusations

Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of engaging in discriminatory politics that foster societal hatred. He argued that the BJP seeks to control educational institutions, including madrasas and Sanskrit schools, rather than improving education quality. Yadav emphasized that the constitution grants rights to all citizens, and he believes the BJP’s divisive politics will not endure.

NCPCR’s Report

Earlier, NCPCR chief Priyank Kanoongo revealed findings from a nine-year study, indicating that 1.25 crore children are deprived of basic rights. The report, “Guardians of Faith or Oppressors of Rights,” highlights the role of madrasas in violating children’s educational rights. Kanoongo stated that madrasas are not fulfilling their purpose and recommended stopping their funding and disbanding madrasa boards.

Recommendations

The NCPCR report suggests that state funding for madrasas should cease, and madrasa boards should be closed. It also recommends that non-Muslim children be moved to formal schools, and Muslim children receive education as per the RTE Act, 2009. These recommendations await the Supreme Court’s judgment on a related case.
