Pashtun Tahafuz Movement Appeals to UN Against Pakistan’s Ban

The Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), a peaceful group advocating for the rights of the Pashtun minority in Pakistan, has called on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, to help lift a ban imposed by the Pakistani government. On October 6, 2024, PTM was labeled a “proscribed organization” under Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997, despite a lack of evidence against them.

PTM claims to be a victim of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and other abuses by the Pakistan Army. On October 9, 2024, Pakistani forces allegedly fired on PTM workers in Jamrud, Khyber district, killing four and injuring others. PTM condemns these actions as violations of international law and Pakistan’s constitution.

The Pakistani government is accused of misusing anti-terrorism laws to target PTM and other activists, with around 200 individuals labeled as terrorists. PTM leader Manzoor Ahmad Pashteen reportedly faced three assassination attempts, allegedly orchestrated by Pakistan’s military intelligence.

Amnesty International and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan have criticized the ban, stating it undermines freedom of association and peaceful assembly. PTM urges the UN to address this issue, warning that the ban suppresses political activism and dissent in Pakistan.
