US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Supports Israel’s Actions Against Hezbollah
In Vientiane, Laos, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed support for Israel’s actions against Hezbollah, emphasizing Israel’s “clear and very legitimate” interest. Blinken highlighted that Hezbollah attempted to open another war front following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. He noted that Hezbollah’s actions forced 70,000 Israelis to flee their homes due to rocket attacks.
Speaking after the 12th ASEAN-US Summit, Blinken stressed the importance of creating a safe environment for people to return home. He mentioned that many in southern Lebanon also had to leave their homes due to Israel’s response to Hezbollah’s attacks. Blinken advocated for a diplomatic solution to ensure safety and security for all.
The conflict began when Hamas attacked Israel, leading to a counter-offensive by Israel. Blinken reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself against terror attacks from Hezbollah and Hamas, while emphasizing the need to protect civilians.
On October 9, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) targeted Hezbollah sites in Beirut’s Dahieh district, striking an intelligence headquarters and a weapons manufacturing facility. The IDF highlighted the proximity of these sites to civilian infrastructure, underscoring the risks posed by Hezbollah’s tactics.
