West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant Urges Junior Doctors to End Hunger Strike Amid Healthcare Improvements

West Bengal Healthcare Initiatives and Junior Doctors’ Hunger Strike

The Chief Secretary of West Bengal, Manoj Pant, has reached out to junior doctors via email, detailing the government’s efforts to enhance safety and security in medical colleges across the state. He urged the doctors, who are on a hunger strike, to end their protest due to health concerns.

Healthcare Improvements

The email included a status report on healthcare initiatives, highlighting the installation of 7,051 CCTV cameras, 893 new duty rooms, and 778 washrooms. New lighting, alarm systems, and biometric access controls are also being implemented. The government has allocated over Rs 113 crores for these projects, with over 90% nearing completion. However, projects at RG Kar Medical College are delayed, expected to finish by October 15.

Stakeholder Involvement

A Stakeholders Committee has been formed in every medical college, including Heads of Departments, doctors, and nursing staff, to oversee ongoing projects. A State-Level Grievance Redressal Committee has also been established for healthcare providers to report issues.

Security Measures

A Security Audit Committee, led by former DGP Surajit Kar Purkayastha, has been formed to assess security in medical colleges. Female constables and private security personnel have been deployed to enhance safety.

Junior Doctors’ Concerns

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front expressed frustration over the government’s delayed response to their concerns, stating it took 96 hours of hunger strike to prompt a meeting. They requested a status report and security audit.
