Arctic Open 2024: Lakshya Sen’s Journey Ends in Pre-Quarterfinals

In Vantaa, Finland, the Commonwealth Games Champion Lakshya Sen was knocked out in the pre-quarterfinals of the Arctic Open 2024 badminton tournament. Lakshya, ranked 19th in the world, faced a challenging match against Chou Tien Chen, ranked 10th. The match lasted one hour and ten minutes, with scores of 19-21, 21-18, 21-15 in favor of Chou.

This was Lakshya’s first match in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour since missing an Olympic medal in Paris. He initially led the game but lost momentum, resulting in his fourth defeat to Chou in six encounters. Previously, Lakshya had defeated Chou in the Paris Olympics quarterfinals.

In the first round of the Vantaa meet, Lakshya advanced due to a walkover after his opponent, Rasmus Gemke from Denmark, withdrew. Meanwhile, Kiran George, who advanced from the qualification round, lost to Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie. In women’s singles, Unnati Hooda was defeated by Canada’s Michelle Li, who had also beaten PV Sindhu earlier. Aakarshi Kashyap and Malvika Bansod also faced losses against their respective opponents.

In mixed doubles, India’s Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath were defeated by China’s Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi.
