Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Radha Raturi Focuses on Rural Road Maintenance
In Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Radha Raturi has taken significant steps to improve the maintenance of rural roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). She has instructed the Public Works Department and the Rural Works Department to hold a joint meeting to clarify responsibilities and set criteria for road construction and maintenance.
Chief Secretary Raturi emphasized the importance of having the same agency handle similar types of work to ensure consistency. She also called for a comparative study of road maintenance systems in other states to adopt the best practices for enhancing the quality and durability of rural roads.
Raturi highlighted the necessity of proper road maintenance for easy access to remote areas, especially during disasters. The meeting revealed that the Uttarakhand Rural Road Development Agency (URRDA) is primarily responsible for road construction, while the Public Works Department currently handles maintenance. The Rural Works Department, with its extensive experience, also aims to participate in this process.
Officials including Secretary Radhika Jha and Pankaj Kumar Pandey, along with representatives from the Public Works Department and Rural Construction Department, attended the meeting to discuss the allocation of maintenance responsibilities.
