Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bans Pashtun Tahafuz Movement

Background

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province in Pakistan, has decided to enforce a strict ban on the activities of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM). This decision follows the federal government’s declaration of the PTM as a proscribed organization.

Government’s Stance

Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, warned that anyone aiding the PTM would face severe consequences. Barrister Saif, spokesperson and advisor to the KP Chief Minister, stated that the federal government banned the PTM under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) due to its activities against the state and constitution.

Recent Events

The PTM attempted to hold a gathering in the Khyber district, leading to clashes with police. The provincial government imposed Section 144 to prevent unlawful assemblies. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur called for discussions with tribal elders to resolve the issue peacefully.

Federal Ban

On October 6, the federal government banned the PTM, citing threats to peace and security. The Ministry of Interior listed the PTM as a proscribed organization under Section 11B of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

Regional Restrictions

The Balochistan government previously banned PTM leader Manzoor Pashteen from entering the region for 90 days, citing public peace and security concerns.

PTM’s Mission

The PTM advocates for Pashtun rights, addressing issues like enforced disappearances and military actions in tribal areas. Despite its mission, the movement faces increasing restrictions.
