Panchayat Elections in Punjab: High Court’s Decision

The Punjab High Court has decided not to halt the Panchayat elections across the state, except in certain villages where candidates faced issues with filing nominations. The court received around 250 petitions about election irregularities, and the next hearing is set for October 14.

Election Details

The Punjab State Election Commission announced that the Gram Panchayat elections would occur on October 15, with nominations starting on September 27. Elections are planned for 13,237 ‘Sarpanches’ and 83,437 ‘Panches’.

Political Reactions

Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of the Opposition and Congress leader, criticized the Aam Aadmi Party for the nomination issues, blaming government officials for negligence. He mentioned that key officials were absent from their offices, causing confusion among candidates.

Clashes in Zira Town

In Zira town, Ferozepur district, candidates from AAP and Congress clashed, leading to stone pelting. The police intervened, and an FIR is to be registered. Ferozepur SSP Somya Mishra confirmed the situation is now under control.
