Rising Street Crimes in Karachi: September 2024 Report by CPLC

In September 2024, Karachi, a major city in Pakistan, faced a significant increase in street crimes, as reported by the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC). The report highlighted 5,533 incidents of street crime, including 3,982 motorbike thefts or snatchings, 1,651 mobile phone snatchings, and 190 auto thefts. Additionally, there were five extortion cases and two kidnappings for ransom.

Karachi has seen a troubling rise in street crime, with nearly 100 people killed in snatching incidents in the first nine months of the year. The CPLC noted that 15,000 mobile phones and 35,000 motorbikes were stolen, along with 1,200 cars. A recent tragic event involved a man named Abdul Malik, who was killed, and his son injured during a robbery in the Korangi area after withdrawing a large sum of money from a bank.

Despite efforts to curb crime, including transferring almost 6,000 criminals to Karachi Central Jail in early 2024, the city’s law and order situation remains dire, with citizens frequently targeted by street criminals.
