Afghan Citizen Charged in Election Day Terror Plot

The United States Justice Department has charged Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, a 27-year-old Afghan citizen living in Oklahoma City, for planning a terrorist attack on Election Day in the US on behalf of ISIS. Tawhedi allegedly conspired to support ISIS by acquiring firearms and ammunition for the attack. He attempted to liquidate his family’s assets and resettle them overseas as part of the plot.

Foiled Terrorist Plot

Attorney General Merrick B Garland stated that the Justice Department thwarted Tawhedi’s plan to use semi-automatic weapons for a violent attack. FBI Director Christopher Wray praised the FBI’s efforts in uncovering and stopping the plot, emphasizing that terrorism remains the FBI’s top priority.

Investigation Details

The FBI’s investigation revealed communications between Tawhedi and an ISIS recruiter. Tawhedi was seen in a video discussing martyrdom and accessed ISIS propaganda online. He and a juvenile co-conspirator attempted to sell family property to fund the attack. They met with FBI assets to purchase AK-47 rifles and ammunition, leading to their arrest.

Legal Proceedings

Tawhedi faces charges of conspiring to support ISIS and receiving firearms for terrorism, with potential sentences of up to 20 and 15 years, respectively. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorneys and Trial Attorneys from the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
