Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Laos from October 10-11 to attend the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit. These events are hosted by Laos, the current Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The visit marks a decade of India’s ‘Act East’ Policy, which aims to strengthen ties with Southeast Asian countries.

Strengthening Ties with Southeast Asia

India’s relationships with Southeast Asian nations are rooted in cultural and civilizational connections. These ties have evolved into a comprehensive partnership, focusing on trade, investment, defense, and connectivity. The ASEAN-India Summit will review the progress of these relations and plan future cooperation.

Recent Diplomatic Engagements

In the first 100 days of his third term, PM Modi met with the Prime Ministers of Vietnam and Malaysia in New Delhi. He also visited Brunei and Singapore, marking the first-ever bilateral visit to Brunei by an Indian Prime Minister. These visits resulted in several agreements and the elevation of India-Malaysia and India-Singapore ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Heritage and Cultural Initiatives

India’s cultural links with Southeast Asia are reinforced through initiatives like the revival of Nalanda University and the restoration of World Heritage sites. India is also involved in the conservation of sites like Vat Phou in Laos and Angkor Vat in Cambodia.

Humanitarian Efforts

India has been proactive in providing humanitarian assistance to the region, especially during natural disasters. Under Operation Sadbhav, India extended aid to Laos and Vietnam following Typhoon Yagi.
