Israel’s Ambassador Reflects on Hamas Attack Anniversary

Reuven Azar’s Speech at Israel Embassy in Delhi

On the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ attack on October 7, Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, emphasized the importance of bringing back hostages held by Hamas. During a solemn ceremony at the Israel embassy in Delhi, Azar stated, “One year ago, October 7 shook our being. It took a few hours to grasp the terrible atrocities happening on our southern border. Israel will prevail. We will defeat our enemies. We will bring back hostages. We will work hard to learn from our mistakes.”

India’s Support for Israel

Highlighting India’s support, Azar expressed gratitude to the Indian government and its people for partnering with Israel to build a better future. He described the horrific scenes of murder, kidnapping, and burning, and the celebrations in Gaza as hostages were dragged out of vehicles, calling the terrorists “worse than animals.”

Historical Parallels and National Trauma

Azar drew parallels with Israel’s past, citing the 1973 surprise attack, and noted that the October 7 attack was different, stating, “50 years later, the 7th of October 2023 was much worse.” He acknowledged the breach of trust between citizens and the state, but highlighted Israel’s resilience and the return of thousands of Israelis to defend their nation.

Commitment to Peace

The Ambassador praised Israel’s youth and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to its homeland and determination to achieve peace. The attack by Hamas last year resulted in over 1200 Israeli deaths and more than 250 hostages, with around 100 still in captivity. Israel’s counter-offensive in Gaza has led to a significant civilian toll, raising humanitarian concerns.
