Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, delivered a keynote address at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference in Germany. He emphasized India’s commitment to sustainable energy, noting the country’s renewable energy capacity increase from 75 GW to 208 GW. Joshi stated that India is a global leader in sustainable energy, having met its climate targets ahead of schedule, despite low per capita emissions among G20 nations.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s renewable energy capacity has grown significantly since 2014, with a 175% increase. Solar energy capacity has expanded 33 times in the last decade. Joshi also highlighted India’s role in the International Solar Alliance, showcasing leadership in combating climate change through solar energy.

The minister discussed India’s advancements in the green shipping sector, aiming to be among the top ten shipbuilding nations by 2030 and top five by 2047. Indian shipyards are being modernized, and older ones are evaluated for reopening to boost green shipbuilding capacity. Joshi mentioned the National Green Hydrogen Mission, targeting 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production annually by 2030, with pilot projects exploring its use in shipping.
