Himachal Pradesh CM Inaugurates New Cancer Hospital in Shimla
On October 7, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a new five-story cancer hospital at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla. The facility, costing Rs. 13.50 crore, aims to enhance cancer treatment in the state by increasing bed capacity from 20 to 65.
Advanced Medical Technologies
The hospital will soon feature advanced radiation therapy systems like IMRT, IGRT, and VMAT. A CT Simulator worth Rs. 7.77 crore is already installed, and a LINAC machine costing Rs. 24 crore is expected to be operational by January 2025. Additionally, Rs. 20 crore has been allocated for a PET scan machine to aid in early cancer detection.
Commitment to Cancer Care
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the state’s commitment to world-class cancer treatment and announced the establishment of a centre of excellence in Hamirpur district. A state-level committee of cancer specialists will guide on the latest treatment technologies.

The ‘Vyavastha Parivartan’ initiative aims to strengthen healthcare, addressing the high cancer incidence in the state. Sukhu criticized the previous BJP government for neglecting health infrastructure and highlighted ongoing improvements in medical institutions across Himachal Pradesh.
