Haryana Elections: Farmers’ Discontent and Exit Polls Favor Congress Over BJP
In New Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remains optimistic about forming the government in Haryana for a third time, despite exit polls suggesting a strong victory for the INDIA bloc. Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Hannan Mollah highlighted the dissatisfaction among Haryana’s farmers with the BJP, citing unmet demands and unfair crop pricing as key issues. Mollah remarked, “Everyone has the right to dream, and the BJP is dreaming of forming the government.” He noted that Chief Minister Khattar’s reputation has suffered, making it difficult for him to hold meetings in the state. Mollah believes the INDIA bloc is in a better position this time, predicting an unfavorable outcome for the BJP on October 8.
Exit polls indicate a potential clean sweep for the Congress party, with some predicting over 50 of the 90 assembly seats. Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait also expressed confidence in the BJP’s defeat, referencing past police actions against farmers. Tikait stated, “The government which does lathicharge will not stay in power.” According to TV-Today C voter projections, Congress may win 50-58 seats, while BJP could secure 20-28 seats. The Republic TV-Matrize poll suggests Congress might win 55-62 seats, with BJP getting 18-24 seats. The majority needed in the 90-member assembly is 46 seats.
Despite these projections, Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini remains confident in the BJP’s ability to form a government independently, claiming they have “all the arrangements.” The single-phase polling for Haryana’s 90 Assembly Constituencies concluded peacefully, with a voter turnout of 65.65%, surpassing the Lok Sabha 2024 turnout of 64.8% in the state.
