In Kolkata, junior doctors are protesting after a tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. They have given the state government a 24-hour ultimatum to meet their demands for improved safety and security in hospitals. If unmet, they plan to start an indefinite hunger strike. Parichay Panda, a junior doctor, expressed frustration over the government’s lack of action, despite admitting to the Supreme Court that only a few safety measures have been implemented.

Protests Across West Bengal

Protests have spread across West Bengal, with students and doctors from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri holding a torchlight procession. Doctors from private hospitals in Kolkata also protested by lighting earthen lamps at Ganga Ghat.

Supreme Court Involvement

The Supreme Court has requested a report from the National Task Force on safety issues following the incident. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and other justices have asked the West Bengal government about the slow progress in implementing safety measures like CCTV cameras and biometric systems. The government cited logistical delays due to floods but promised completion by October 15.

Social Media Concerns

Advocate Vrinda Grover, representing the victim’s family, raised concerns about social media posts revealing the victim’s identity. The Supreme Court has ordered the removal of such posts to protect the victim’s privacy.
