S Jaishankar Visits Sri Lanka to Strengthen Ties
On October 4, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation and strengthening the relationship between India and Sri Lanka for the benefit of both nations.
Warm Greetings and Discussions
Jaishankar conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu to President Dissanayake. He expressed appreciation for the warm sentiments and guidance offered by the Sri Lankan President regarding India-Sri Lanka relations.
Meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister
Earlier, Jaishankar held talks with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. They discussed various aspects of the India-Sri Lanka partnership and India’s support for Sri Lanka’s economic rebuilding. Jaishankar emphasized India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR as guiding principles for their bilateral ties.
New Leadership in Sri Lanka
Vijitha Herath, who took office on September 24, is also the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, National Integration, Social Security, and Mass Media. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna party, was elected as President on September 22.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Dissanayake on his election victory, highlighting Sri Lanka’s importance in India’s regional policies.
