Delhi High Court Resolves Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention Case
The Delhi High Court has concluded the third plea concerning the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, following his release. Chief Justice Manmohan noted that an interview with Wangchuk indicated he was not detained, leading to the petition’s dismissal. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing Delhi Police, stated the petition lacked substance, a point agreed upon by Advocate Prashant Bhushan, who sought to withdraw it. The court approved this request, officially closing the case.
Previously, two related petitions were dismissed after Solicitor General Mehta confirmed Wangchuk’s release and the withdrawal of the Delhi Police’s prohibitory order. On Thursday, Advocate Bhushan, representing a third petitioner, claimed Wangchuk and others were taken to Ambedkar Bhawan and restrained. The court scheduled the matter for Friday, instructing both parties to submit affidavits. Ultimately, the bench, led by Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, dismissed the petitions filed by Mustafa Haji and Azad, which challenged the prohibitory order and sought Wangchuk’s release.
The court was addressing public interest litigations (PILs) that called for the release of around 120 individuals from Ladakh, including Wangchuk, who were reportedly detained at the Delhi border. These individuals intended to peacefully enter the capital to advocate for sixth schedule status for Ladakh.
