Supreme Court Orders New Investigation into Tirumala Temple Prasadam Ghee Allegations

The Supreme Court of India has ordered a fresh independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into allegations of adulterated ghee being used in laddus distributed as prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh. This decision comes in response to petitions seeking a court-monitored investigation into claims that animal fat was used in the laddus under the previous YSRCP government.

Formation of the Special Investigation Team

The Supreme Court has mandated the formation of a five-member SIT, which will include two officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), two officers from the Andhra Pradesh police, and one senior officer from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The CBI director will oversee the SIT’s investigation.

Concerns and Statements

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing one of the petitioners, urged the court to establish an independent SIT to ensure a fair probe. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, emphasized that if the allegations are true, they are unacceptable and suggested that a senior central official supervise the SIT to inspire confidence.

Response to Public Allegations

The Supreme Court also addressed Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s public allegations about the use of adulterated ghee. Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan criticized the Chief Minister for making such claims without conclusive proof.
