US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and President Biden Respond to Hurricane Helene

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has authorized the deployment of up to 1,000 active-duty soldiers to assist in delivering essential supplies to affected communities. This decision supports the efforts of US President Joe Biden, who, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, visited the impacted areas in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia to assess the damage.

President Biden has directed the Department of Defence to deploy these troops to aid in response and recovery efforts, joining 6,000 National Guard members and over 4,800 federal workers already on the ground. The hurricane, which made landfall in Florida, has claimed at least 155 lives and left millions without power across several states, including South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.

Vice President Harris announced that the federal government would cover the full cost of debris removal and emergency measures in Georgia for three months. President Biden emphasized the federal government’s commitment to providing every possible resource to save lives and assist those in need.

The deployed soldiers will work alongside the North Carolina National Guard to deliver life-saving supplies to isolated communities. The National Guard has activated over 6,500 Guardsmen and numerous vehicles and aircraft to support the response.

President Biden expressed his condolences to those affected by the storm and praised the bravery of rescue teams, calling them ‘heroes.’ He assured that the federal government would remain committed to helping the affected communities recover.
