Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to Face Indictment in Toshakhana Case on October 2

An accountability court in Islamabad has set October 2 as the date for the indictment of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the new Toshakhana case. Special Judge Central Shah Rukh Arjumand heard the case at Adiala Jail, with both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi present for the hearing. The judge rejected their post-arrest bail pleas in the Toshakhana-II case.

This development follows the Islamabad district and sessions court’s acceptance of appeals filed by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi against their conviction in the Iddat case. The Iddat case involved Islamic customs of marriage not being adhered to by Khan before marrying Bibi, leading to a seven-year prison sentence and a hefty fine in February earlier this year.

On July 13, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were arrested in a new National Accountability Bureau (NAB) reference related to Toshakhana, just hours after their acquittal in the Iddat case. The Toshakhana-II case is a follow-up to the Toshakhana-I case, where Khan was accused of failing to disclose gifts received during his tenure and allegedly selling them, causing a loss to the national treasury.

The prosecution argued that Imran Khan undervalued a Bulgari set gifted to Bushra Bibi by the Saudi Crown Prince in 2021 and kept it without depositing it in Pakistan’s national treasury. The indictment further complicates matters for the former Prime Minister as he faces various charges while in jail.
