Supreme Court Questions Andhra Pradesh Government on Tirupati Prasadam Controversy
The Supreme Court of India on Monday addressed the Andhra Pradesh government regarding the ‘Tirupati Prasadam’ controversy. The court emphasized that ‘Gods should be kept away from politics’ and questioned the state’s decision to go to the press about the issue.
The controversy involves allegations that animal fat was used in the ghee for making laddus served as Prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala. The court asked why the state went public with the issue when a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe was already ordered.
Senior advocate Siddhartha Luthra, representing Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), mentioned that people complained about the taste of the laddus. However, the court noted that there was no proof that contaminated ghee was used.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that the matter is of faith and needs to be thoroughly examined to find who is responsible. The court is considering whether the state-appointed SIT should continue the investigation or if an independent agency should take over.
