Italian Salerno Medical School Honors UAE’s Sheikh Abdulla for COVID-19 Efforts
The Italian Salerno Medical School has awarded Sheikh Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the National Media Office and the UAE Media Council, the Schola Salernitana Lumen et Magister Award. This award recognizes the UAE’s significant humanitarian efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recognition Ceremony
The ceremony, attended by UAE Ambassador Abdulla Ali Al Saboosi, was held at the Italian Chamber of Deputies in Rome under the patronage of Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella. Other honorees included Awadh Seghayer Al Ketbi, Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority; Syed Basar Shueb, CEO of International Holding Company; and Peng Xiao, CEO of G42 Group.

In his speech, Sheikh Abdulla conveyed greetings from the UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and praised the frontline heroes and volunteers for their dedication. He emphasized that the award is a tribute to the UAE’s contributions during the pandemic and the sacrifices of its people.
UAE’s Humanitarian Efforts
The UAE played a leading role in global humanitarian efforts, providing over 80% of international aid during the pandemic. It sent medical and logistical aid to 135 countries, built six field hospitals, and conducted more COVID-19 tests than its population. The UAE also donated $10 million to the World Health Organization and allocated $10 billion to help developing countries recover from the pandemic.
Future Cooperation
Sheikh Abdulla expressed hope for increased cooperation between the UAE and the Salerno Medical School in scientific research and medical innovation. The event also featured a conference on Arab contributions to medicine and a documentary screening, followed by an official reception and press conference.
