Indore to Use AI in City Buses for Driver Safety
The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has decided to install an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system in city buses operated by Atal Indore City Transport Services Limited (AICTSL). This system will monitor drivers for signs of inebriation, sleepiness, illness, or mobile phone usage, and will send alerts to the city bus control room if any issues are detected.
IMC Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava stated, “Safety is the first priority in the vision of Digital Indore, and that is why Indore has become the first city in the country to make a CCTV surveillance policy. We are now going to start using Artificial Intelligence for monitoring the drivers in these buses very soon.”
The AI system will be installed in five buses as a pilot project. Based on the results, it will be expanded to other buses. The system will include breath analyzers to detect alcohol, and the bus will only start after the test. It will also monitor the driver and conductor with a dash camera, which will send alerts if the driver appears unwell, sleepy, or is using a mobile phone.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Shivam Verma added, “We constantly try to provide better and safer travel to the passengers in the city buses. Keeping this in mind, we are going to use AI technology in city buses. If the driver feels sleepy, talks on mobile while driving the bus, or is driving in an inebriated state, then an alert message will be conveyed to the AICTSL bus control room.”
