US Secretary Antony Blinken Meets Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in New York

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in New York. They discussed ways to advance long-term economic and political collaborations between the US and Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared pictures of the meeting, highlighting the fruitful discussions.

Yunus also met with Noel Quinn, CEO of HSBC Global, to discuss the bank’s increased involvement in energy, trade financing, and startups in Bangladesh. Yunus shared on social media about the productive meeting with Quinn.

Earlier in the week, Yunus called for the repatriation of Rohingyas during a high-level UN event in New York. He emphasized the significant challenges Bangladesh faces due to the presence of over 1.2 million displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar and stressed that repatriation is the only sustainable solution.

This visit marks Yunus’s first trip to the United States as the head of the interim government, following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina amid protests. Yunus was sworn in on August 8 after the dissolution of the parliament. He has a series of high-profile meetings lined up on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and is set to address the general debate on September 27.
