Amitabh Yash Denies Caste-Based Encounter Allegations in Uttar Pradesh

Amitabh Yash, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Special Task Force, Uttar Pradesh, has dismissed allegations of caste-based encounters as ‘baseless.’ He stated that criminals have ‘no caste’ and emphasized the efforts made by the police to control crime.

Efforts to Control Crime

Yash highlighted various measures taken to bring crime under control, including the activation of the Special Task Force (STF) and Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and the use of specialist agencies and technical assistance. He also mentioned ‘Operation Trinetra,’ which encourages public participation by installing CCTV cameras around their properties.

Encounters as a Last Resort

Yash explained that encounters are an incidental part of the drive to arrest criminals, occurring only when criminals fire on the police. He noted that encounters make up less than 1% of total arrests and reiterated that the allegations of caste-based encounters are unfounded.

Crime Control Achievements

Yash stated that the Uttar Pradesh Police have brought crime under control in recent years, with around 50,000 criminals convicted in one year. Special focus has been placed on crimes against women and children, as well as the conviction of mafia members.

Priyanka Gandhi’s Condemnation

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi condemned the encounters, stating that they have no place in a society governed by the rule of law. She called for a judicial investigation and questioned the effectiveness of the encounters in improving law and order, noting that nearly 13,000 encounters have taken place in Uttar Pradesh in the last seven years.
