Justice Rajiv Shakdher was sworn in as the 29th Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on Wednesday. The ceremony took place at Raj Bhawan and was administered by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla.

Justice Shakdher replaces Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, who has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court. Justice Shakdher’s tenure will be brief, as he is set to retire on October 18.

Background and Career

Born on October 19, 1962, Justice Shakdher studied at St Columba’s School in Delhi. He graduated with a BCom (Hons) from Delhi University in 1984 and obtained an LLB degree from the University of Delhi in 1987. He also completed Chartered Accountancy in 1987 and pursued an Advanced Course of Law at the University of London in 1994.

Justice Shakdher has extensive experience in civil litigation, constitutional law, and commercial litigation. He has practiced in the Supreme Court of India, High Court of Delhi, and other high courts and tribunals. He was appointed as a counsel for the Union of India in 1995 and served on various panels until 2007.

Ceremony Highlights

After taking the oath, Justice Shakdher received a Red Carpet Welcome and Guard of Honour at the High Court premises. A full Court Welcome Address was held in his honor, where he emphasized his commitment to addressing grievances without discrimination.

Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan praised Justice Shakdher for his landmark judgments, intelligence, and integrity. Other notable speakers included Advocate General Anup Rattan, Bar Council Chairman Lovneesh Kanwar, and Deputy Solicitor General Balram Sharma.

Judges of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, including Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, Justice Vivek Singh Thakur, and others, were also present at the ceremony. The Registrar General conducted the proceedings.
