Heavy Rains Cause Flooding and Landslide in Mumbai, Schools Closed

Mumbai faced severe waterlogging and traffic jams on Wednesday due to heavy rains. Areas like Kurla East, Nehru Nagar, and Chembur were heavily affected. A landslide at Mumbra bypass at around 11:30 pm disrupted traffic for over three hours. Fire officer Swapnil Sarnobat confirmed that no lives were lost and traffic resumed after clearing the debris.

The Mumbai Police announced a holiday for all schools and colleges on September 26, 2024, urging residents to stay indoors. BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani reviewed the situation and confirmed the holiday for safety reasons. Pune District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase also declared a holiday for schools in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad due to predicted rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts, and an orange alert for Pune. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in various regions including Konkan, Goa, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
