GE Aerospace’s GEnx Engine Reaches 2 Million Flight Hours with South Asian Airlines

New Delhi, India – GE Aerospace announced that its GEnx commercial aviation engine has achieved two million flight hours with South Asian airlines. The first GEnx engine was delivered to the region in 2012, and now 90 GEnx engines power flights for Air India, Vistara, and Biman Bangladesh.

Milestone Achievement

Mahendra Nair, Group Vice President for Commercial Programme at GE Aerospace, highlighted the significance of this milestone during a visit to New Delhi. He stated, “The GEnx engine has been instrumental in supporting South Asia’s aviation growth. This milestone is a testament to its engineering excellence and technology maturity.”

Vikram Rai, South Asia Chief Executive Officer at GE Aerospace, added, “We are proud of our long relationships with the South Asian airlines, including most recently Air India, as it plans expansion of operations with 20 new wide-body aircraft that will be powered by 40 GEnx engines.”

Technological Advancements

The GEnx engine powers Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and the 747-8, showcasing advanced propulsion technology. It is 15 percent more fuel-efficient and emits up to 15 percent less CO2 than its predecessor, the CF6 engine. The engine also features a twin-annular pre-swirl (TAPS) combustor, reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 60% below current regulatory limits.

Sustainability Efforts

In March 2023, Vistara’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, powered by GEnx engines, flew from Charleston, South Carolina, to New Delhi using a blend of 30 percent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) with conventional jet fuel. This marked the first long-haul route to India using SAF.

Advanced Monitoring

GE Aerospace uses advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models to monitor its GEnx engines. The AI-enabled Blade Inspection Tool (BIT) helps technicians inspect high-pressure turbine engine blades more accurately and quickly, contributing to building predictive models.

Long-standing Partnership

GE Aerospace has been a partner to India’s aviation industry for over forty years, with 1,300 GE Aerospace and partner engines in service. These engines power major Indian airlines and the Indian Air Force’s Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mk 1, helicopters, and the Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier battleships and frigates.
