India’s men’s and women’s chess teams, who won historic double gold medals at the recently-concluded Chess Olympiad, will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, in New Delhi.

Historic Wins at the Chess Olympiad

In the Chess Olympiad, India’s men’s and women’s teams made history by securing gold medals for the first time in their respective categories. This achievement places India among the elite countries to have won double gold medals in the same edition of the competition.

Men’s Team Victory

The men’s team, consisting of D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna, clinched the gold medal by defeating Slovenia. Key wins from D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi gave India a 2-0 lead, with Praggnanandhaa also winning his game and Vidit drawing his match. India defeated Slovenia 3.5-0.5 to secure the gold.

Women’s Team Triumph

The women’s team, featuring Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, and Tania Sachdev, won gold by beating Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5. Harika Dronavalli, Divya Deshmukh, and Vantika Agrawal won their matches, while R Vaishali drew her game.

Celebration and Recognition

The Sports Authority of India shared a clip of the chess players heading to meet PM Modi at his residence, celebrating their stupendous gold medal victory. The USA secured the second spot in the men’s competition and a bronze in the women’s competition, while Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan won bronze and silver in the men’s and women’s competitions, respectively.
