Bombay High Court to Hear Petition on Akshay Shinde’s Death in Police Encounter
The Bombay High Court is set to hear a petition from Anna Shinde, the father of Akshay Shinde, who was killed in a police encounter. Anna Shinde, through his lawyer Amit Katranvare, alleges that his son was killed in a fake encounter and demands a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case.
Akshay Shinde, a 23-year-old former school janitor, was accused of sexually assaulting two girls in a school toilet and was arrested on August 17. On September 23, while being transported from Taloja Central Jail to the Thane Crime Branch office, Shinde allegedly snatched a police revolver and opened fire, leading to his death in police retaliatory firing.
The incident has sparked a controversy between the ruling Mahayuti government and the opposition in Maharashtra, which is preparing for Assembly polls later this year. An FIR has been registered against Shinde for attempting to murder police officers. His body was transferred from Kalwa Civic Hospital to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed the implementation of the Centre’s guidelines on the safety and security of children in schools across states and union territories, with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) coordinating and monitoring the implementation.
