Samsung Workers in Chennai Protest for Better Wages and Conditions
Samsung Electronics employees in Chennai have been on strike since September 9, demanding better wages, union recognition, and an 8-hour workday. The company claims it pays 1.8 times more than the regional average and is ready to address grievances. Despite this, over 1,000 workers continue to protest, led by union head Muthukumar. The management has filed a case to move protestors further away from the factory. Talks with the state labour department have so far failed to resolve the issue.
Company’s Statement
Samsung stated, “At Samsung India, the welfare of our workers is our top priority. The average monthly salary of our full-time manufacturing workers at the Chennai plant is 1.8 times higher than that of similar workers employed by other companies in the region.” The company also mentioned that workers are eligible for overtime pay and other allowances, and it is ready to engage with workers to address their grievances.
Union’s Demands
The workers, led by union head Muthukumar, are demanding better wages and improved working conditions. They have 20 key demands, including a wage hike, union recognition, and an 8-hour workday. Muthukumar said, “Our demands have not been met, and management has urged us to disband the union. They are hindering the recognition of the union by raising complaints.”
Legal Actions and Protests
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Tamil Nadu State Secretary stated that Samsung management had filed a case in the Kanchipuram court requesting that protestors be seated 500 metres away from the premises, even though they were already sitting two kilometres away. On Monday, protestors were detained after entering Kanchipuram but were released later in the evening. A case was filed against more than 100 employees.
