Protests Erupt in New York as Muhammad Yunus Attends UNGA

New York [US], September 24: Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, faced protests outside his hotel in New York. Yunus is in the US to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.

When Indian media tried to ask him questions, Yunus avoided responding, and his security kept reporters away. Protesters chanted slogans like ‘Go Back’ and ‘Step down’ against Yunus, accusing him of coming to power through ‘dirty politics’ and alleging attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.

Sheikh Jamal Hussain, a protestor, claimed Yunus took power unconstitutionally and that many people have been killed. Another protester, DM Ronald, demanded peace and accused Yunus of violence against Hindus, Muslims, and Christians. Dr. Rahman also protested, calling Yunus an unelected leader who doesn’t care about minorities.

Yunus is scheduled to address the General Debate of the UNGA on September 27 and has several high-profile meetings lined up, including with US President Joe Biden and other global leaders. He will also attend events on the Rohingya crisis and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s UN membership.

On Monday, Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain met with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to discuss bilateral ties.
