Cameron Green’s Role in Border-Gavaskar Trophy Depends on Steve Smith’s Batting Position
Melbourne [Australia], September 24: Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has stated that his role in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India will depend on where Steve Smith wants to bat. The series will begin on November 22, with the first Test at Perth.
Green mentioned that he would not refuse an opportunity to open the batting. However, this decision hinges on whether Smith, who has been promoted to the opening slot following David Warner’s retirement, decides to move back to his usual number four position.
Smith, the ninth-highest run-getter in the series, has had mixed performances as an opener, scoring 171 runs at an average of 28.50 in four Test appearances. Green, on the other hand, showcased his potential at number four with a magnificent 174 against New Zealand at Wellington.
Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly Podcast, Green said, “I think it is totally up to Steve [Smith]. He has earned the right to bat where he wants to bat and whatever happens, I am happy to move around him. He is a great of the game, and he has earned the right to bat where he wants to bat.”
Green also noted that opening the batting after bowling could be challenging but is something he is willing to consider. He has 35 Test wickets in 28 Tests, including a five-wicket haul against South Africa in 2022.
The Border-Gavaskar series will feature five Tests, with the second Test scheduled for December 6 to 10 at Adelaide Oval in a day-night format. The third Test will be held at The Gabba in Brisbane from December 14 to 18. The Boxing Day Test will take place at Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 to 30, and the series will conclude with the fifth Test at Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7.
