Larsen & Toubro Wins Big Contracts to Boost Power Grids in Saudi Arabia and UAE

Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division has secured major contracts in the Middle East to expand and strengthen high-voltage electricity grids. The estimated value of these contracts ranges from Rs 10000 to Rs 15000 crore.

Key Projects in Saudi Arabia

The projects in Saudi Arabia include High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems and Gas Insulated Substations (GIS). These systems are essential for modernizing and interconnecting regional grids. L&T will establish +-500kV HVDC transmission links, which are crucial for seamless power exchange and grid stability. Additionally, L&T will build two 380kV overhead transmission lines and a 380kV gas-insulated substation.

Key Projects in the UAE

In Abu Dhabi, L&T will construct two 400kV gas-insulated substations. The project includes installing series current-limiting reactors, auto transformers, advanced control and protection systems, and substation monitoring tools. These additions will enhance grid management and fault detection capabilities, making the electricity grid more efficient and reliable.

Statements from L&T

T. Madhava Das, whole-time director and senior executive vice president (utilities) at L&T, expressed confidence in the company’s role in shaping the future of energy infrastructure. He stated, “The fortification and modernisation of transmission systems is the foremost step in establishing a secure, resilient grid capable of handling variable renewable generation in an evolving energy market. We thank our customers for entrusting these projects with us.”
