Man Accused in Badlapur Case Dies After Snatching Police Gun and Firing

Thane, Maharashtra – A man named Akshay Shinde, accused of sexually assaulting two minor girls in Badlapur, died on Monday evening after a dramatic incident involving the police. Shinde, who was being taken for investigation, snatched a gun from a police officer and opened fire.

Incident Details

According to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Shinde’s ex-wife had lodged a complaint of sexual assault against him. While being transported from Taloja Jail to Badlapur, Shinde grabbed a police officer’s gun and fired at the officer and into the air. In self-defense, the police fired back, injuring Shinde. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Official Statements

Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis defended the police’s actions, stating, “The opposition raises questions on everything, the same opposition was asking to hang him. If he had attacked the police, wouldn’t the police do the self-defense? It’s wrong to create any issue out of it.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also commented, “He fired on a police personnel, Nilesh More, who got injured and has been admitted to the hospital. Police in self-defense took that action. More information will come out after investigation.”

Call for Investigation

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey called for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, citing many doubts and the need for clarity.

Background of the Case

Earlier in August, the Bombay High Court took notice of the alleged sexual assault of two girls at a school in Badlapur. The court emphasized the need to educate boys about gender equality and proper behavior from a young age. The court criticized the initial investigation by Badlapur Police, leading to the suspension of three officers.

The accused, who had been married three times, was arrested on August 17 for allegedly abusing the girls. The state government had already formed an SIT to investigate the sexual assault case.
