Students Clash at Delhi University’s Khalsa College Over DUSU Elections

New Delhi [India], September 23: Two groups of students clashed at Delhi University’s Khalsa College, resulting in a student’s turban falling off. The incident happened on Sunday and was captured in a video that went viral on social media.

An FIR has been registered at Maurice Nagar police station, and the matter is under investigation. The FIR states that a student and his group were going to file a nomination for the DUSU election when another group opposed them. This led to an argument that escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, one student’s turban came undone, and he alleged that his hair was pulled and he was beaten up.

In the video, a group of students is seen standing outside the principal’s office. A student wearing a red turban is pulled, beaten, and kicked by a few students. Some students intervened after the turban came undone.

An FIR has been lodged under sections 299 (deliberate act to outrage religious feelings), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (joint criminal liability) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

Earlier, the college principal, Gurmohinder Singh, wrote to the Delhi University administration, stating that the college would conduct its own student elections. This decision was made following directions from the DSGMC, which governs four Delhi University colleges, including Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College. However, Mata Sundri College for Women, another college under DSGMC, is not affiliated with DUSU.

The principal said the college’s own elections would have office bearers nominated by the Staff Advisory Committee. This decision triggered protests from student members of both the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Congress’ National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). The ABVP also filed a petition in a Delhi court, challenging the disassociation of DSGMC colleges from DUSU.
