Sri Lanka’s President-designate Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed his gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his congratulatory message following his victory in the presidential election. In a post on X, Dissanayake emphasized the importance of strengthening ties and cooperation between the two nations.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Dissanayake, highlighting Sri Lanka’s special place in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR, which focuses on sustainable use of oceans and a stable maritime domain. Modi expressed his eagerness to work closely with Dissanayake to enhance cooperation for the benefit of both countries and the region.

Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, also conveyed greetings to Dissanayake, reaffirming India’s commitment to deepening ties for the prosperity of both nations. Dissanayake, the leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna party, won the election after a historic run-off, becoming the ninth Executive President of Sri Lanka.

The election saw incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe eliminated after the first round, marking his third unsuccessful bid for the presidency.
