Jharkhand High Court Orders Immediate Resumption of Internet Services During Exams
The Jharkhand High Court has ordered the immediate resumption of internet services in the state, which had been suspended during the Jharkhand General Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination on September 21 and 22.
High Court’s Decision
On Sunday, the High Court heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and questioned the necessity of suspending the entire internet service. The court stated that using phrases like ‘public interest’ and ‘adequate safety of students’ without factual basis is insufficient to justify the shutdown. The court emphasized that such actions infringe on fundamental rights under Article 19 of the Constitution of India.
Government’s Initial Decision
Earlier, the Government of Jharkhand announced the suspension of mobile internet services for over five hours on September 21 and 22 to prevent malpractice during the exams. The government cited previous instances where individuals used mobile applications like Facebook, WhatsApp, X (Twitter), Telegram, and YouTube for unfair practices. The government believed that this measure was necessary to ensure a fair and transparent examination process and to maintain public confidence in the recruitment process.
