Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and PM Narendra Modi Join Forces in Cancer Fight at Quad Event

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Saturday that Japan is supporting the deployment of medical equipment and offering technical cooperation to combat cancer. Speaking at the Quad leaders’ Cancer Moonshot event in Wilmington, Delaware, Kishida emphasized Japan’s ongoing commitment to these efforts.

He highlighted Japan’s collaboration with research institutions in the United States, Australia, and India, particularly in measures against cervical cancer. Kishida stated, “Regarding our support for measures against cancers in the Indo-Pacific region, Japan has offered support such as the deployment of equipment and technical cooperation, or support through international organisations and initiatives.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke at the event, underscoring the shared determination to provide affordable and accessible healthcare. Modi said, “This reflects our shared determination to provide affordable, accessible and quality health care. During the COVID pandemic, we had taken the Quad Vaccine initiative for the Indo-Pacific and I am glad that in the Quad, we have decided to jointly tackle challenges like cervical cancer.”

The Cancer Moonshot is a White House initiative aimed at leading the fight against cancer through new collaborations and progress across the oncology community. It has announced over 95 new programs, policies, and resources to address key priorities, with significant contributions from private companies, nonprofits, academic institutions, and patient groups.

The US Embassy in New Delhi facilitated the first-ever US-India Cancer Moonshot Dialogue on August 5-6 at the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi. Hosted by the Department of Biotechnology, the dialogue focused on strengthening US-India biomedical research cooperation and developing solutions to improve global health.
