In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, the police arrested seven people after an Army officer and his fiancee were allegedly attacked by some miscreants while returning from a hotel late at night. The incident happened on September 15.

Details of the Incident

Krushna Prasad Dash, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Bhubaneswar, stated that a case has been registered under several sections of the law. During the investigation, the police recovered a vehicle and 11 mobile phones from the accused. They also found a video and audio clip, which are being examined.

Arrested Individuals

The arrested individuals are Rakesh Naik, Abhilash Sawant, Aman Kumar, Aditya Ranjan Behra, Akash Padhiyari, Harish Manta, and Ashish Kumar. Further investigation is ongoing.

Government’s Response

The Odisha government has reiterated its ‘zero tolerance’ policy on violence against women and has initiated an inquiry into the matter. The Chief Minister’s Office issued a statement saying that necessary steps and departmental actions have been taken regarding the issue. Five police officials, including the Inspector in Charge of Bharatpur police station, have been suspended, and a Crime Branch probe has been ordered.

Former Chief Minister of Odisha and Leader of the Opposition, Naveen Patnaik, has called for a judicial probe into the incident and criticized the BJP government for stopping certain initiatives for the people.
