Kolkata Protests Demand Justice for RG Kar Trainee Doctor’s Rape and Murder

People from all walks of life took out a torch rally from South Kolkata Highland Park to North Kolkata Shyamabazar, demanding justice for the trainee doctor in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The protesters carried torches and chanted slogans calling for justice.

Earlier, the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front held a protest march from Swasthya Bhawan in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area to the CGO complex, urging the CBI to fast-track the investigation. They announced they would pause their sit-in due to the flood situation but would continue protests in all medical colleges and hospitals. They plan to serve in flood-affected areas from Saturday.

West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant assured safety and security measures, leading the junior doctors to call off their strike, which had lasted over 40 days. Emergency services will resume, but OPD services will remain suspended.

On September 10, a CBI court remanded Sandip Ghosh and three others to judicial custody until September 23 for financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI arrested Ghosh on September 2 following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. The CBI also conducted polygraph tests on Dr. Ghosh as part of their investigation into the rape-murder case.

A woman trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
