A meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 took place at the Parliament Library Building in New Delhi. The committee heard views from various representatives, including the All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council and the Muslim Rashtriya Manch.

First Session

In the first session, Syed Naseruddin Chishty, Chairman of the All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council, shared his suggestions regarding the bill. He expressed optimism, stating, “A delegation of the All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council had come to put forth their points and suggestions regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in front of the JPC committee…This is a very good thing that after listening to all the stakeholders, a decision will be taken…”

Second Session

In the second session, the committee recorded views from the Muslim Rashtriya Manch. The previous day, the fifth sitting of the committee saw heated debates on the rights of the Muslim community and the majority population.

Contributions and Debates

Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Vice-Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University, Patna, presented his views, supporting many provisions of the bill but raising objections on a few points. His arguments led to a heated exchange with BJP and NDA MPs. Additionally, the All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaaz supported the bill, while the All India Muslim Personal Law Board strongly opposed it.
