A meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 took place at the Parliament Library Building in New Delhi on Thursday. The meeting was attended by several committee members, including Chairman Jagdambika Pal and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi.

During the meeting, the committee heard views and suggestions from various experts and stakeholders. Among them were Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Vice Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University, Patna; representatives from Pasmanda Muslim Mahaaz; and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

Upcoming Meetings

The JPC will hold another meeting on September 20 to hear suggestions from the All India Sajjadanashin Council, Ajmer; Muslim Rashtriya Manch, Delhi; and Bharat First, Delhi, regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. A previously scheduled meeting on September 18 was postponed due to requests from some members.

Reasons for Postponement

Chairman Jagdambika Pal explained that the meeting was postponed because of Ganesh Chaturthi on September 17 and the Eid-e-Milad procession in Maharashtra. The meetings on September 19 and 20 will proceed as planned.

Previous Meetings

The fourth JPC meeting on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 was held on September 6, where senior officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) presented their views. Stakeholders like the Zakat Foundation of India and the Telangana Waqf Board also shared their suggestions and evidence.

Support from Muslim Social Workers and Scholars

On September 13, a group of Muslim social workers and Islamic scholars expressed their support for the government during a meeting in Delhi. Islamic Scholar Mufti Wajahat Qasmi emphasized that it is not correct to always doubt the government’s intentions, urging people to read the bill before forming opinions.
