Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], September 18: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the ‘One Nation One Election’ plan proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Owaisi stated that the plan aims to eliminate regional parties and is based on the convenience of the ruling party.

During a press conference, Owaisi mentioned that both his party and former CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury opposed the plan. He argued that national elections focus on national issues, while assembly elections address regional issues, which are crucial for local governance.

Owaisi questioned the practicality of the plan, asking how assemblies would function if a government falls in between terms. He emphasized that the constitution should operate based on constitutional principles, not convenience.

Earlier today, the Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which suggests simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections, along with urban body and panchayat polls within 100 days. A High-level Committee on Simultaneous Elections, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year. The report, consisting of 18,626 pages, is the result of extensive consultations and research over 191 days.
