In Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district, 47 people have tragically lost their lives after consuming illicit liquor. The incident has caused significant turmoil in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Assembly Session in Chaos

The second day of the Tamil Nadu Assembly session in Chennai was marked by chaos as AIADMK legislators, dressed in black, raised slogans demanding a discussion on the Kallakurichi tragedy. Speaker Appavu ordered the eviction of AIADMK MLAs from the Assembly hall, leading to scenes of chaos both inside and outside the Assembly.

Arrests and Judicial Custody

Three individuals, identified as Govindaraj, Damadoran, and Vijaya, have been arrested in connection with the illicit liquor case and sent to 15 days of judicial custody. They were taken to Cuddalore Central Prison.

Calls for CBI Inquiry

Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting a CBI inquiry into the deaths. Annamalai accused the ruling DMK government of collusion with local liquor sellers and ineffective governance.

Government Response

Chief Minister MK Stalin announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those undergoing treatment. A judicial inquiry led by retired Justice B Gokuldas has been ordered, with a report expected within three months.

Victims Undergoing Treatment

Victims are receiving treatment at Kallakurichi Government Medical College and Hospital, as well as hospitals in Salem, Villupuram, and JIPMER in Puducherry.
