34 People Killed in Bangladesh Protests Over Job Quotas
Dhaka, Bangladesh – At least 34 people have lost their lives and many others have been injured as student protests over job quotas have intensified across Bangladesh. The Anti-Discrimination Students Movement announced a non-cooperation movement, leading to violent clashes.
The Bangladesh government has declared a three-day general holiday from August 5 to August 7 to ensure public safety. In Sylhet’s Golapganj upazila, two people were shot dead and at least 25, including policemen and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members, were injured in a clash.
The protests began over the reintroduction of a quota scheme that reserved more than half of all government jobs for certain groups, which has disappointed graduates facing high unemployment. Protesters have declared a long march to Dhaka for Tuesday.
A curfew has been imposed indefinitely starting from 6:00 pm today in the capital and other major cities. Social media platforms Facebook and WhatsApp are reportedly inaccessible in Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has invited protest leaders to meet her at her official residence, Ganabhaban, to discuss their concerns and avoid further conflict.
