On August 28, during the Dahi Handi celebrations for Krishna Janmashtami in Mumbai, 238 people were reported injured. This information comes from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and various private hospitals. Initially, the number of injured was 206.

The injured participants, known as Govindas, are receiving treatment at different private hospitals. So far, 157 people have been discharged. Last year, 195 Govindas were injured during the Dahi Handi celebrations, with 18 admitted to hospitals and 177 discharged.

What is Dahi Handi?

Dahi Handi is a major cultural event where an earthen pot filled with curd, butter, and other milk products is hung at a height. Groups form human pyramids to reach and break the pot. This tradition symbolizes Lord Krishna’s playful nature and his love for butter and curd.

According to the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra, which usually falls in August or September. Janmashtami is celebrated with prayers, decorated swings, dance, music, and the Dahi Handi competition.
