2150 Students Graduate from IIT Guwahati in 2024

On July 14, 2024, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati celebrated its 26th Convocation Ceremony, where 2150 students received their degrees. The graduates included 1682 male and 468 female students. Among them, 932 students completed their Bachelors of Technology and Bachelors of Design courses, while 277 students earned PhDs and Dual (Masters + PhD) degrees. Additionally, 182 students graduated with a Master of Science (MSc), 54 with a Master of Arts (MA), 34 with an MS (Research), and 16 with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA).

Top Achievers

Vedant Gaurang Shah, a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, received the President of India Gold Medal for achieving the highest score in the B.Tech./B.Des batch. Rethyam Gupta, a B.Tech. in Engineering Physics, was awarded the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. Arpita Ray, an M.Tech. in Geotechnical Engineering, received the Governor of Assam PG Gold Medal, while Pranshu Kandoi, a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, was awarded the Governor of Assam UG Gold Medal.

Special Guests

Padma Shri awardee Dr. Sridhar Vembu, Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, was the Chief Guest at the event. Prof. Gautam Barua, Former Director of IIT Guwahati, attended as the Guest of Honor. Dr. Rajiv I Modi, Chairman of the Board of Governors, presided over the event virtually, and Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao, Acting Chairperson of the Board of Governors, delivered the welcome address.

Convocation Address

Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, presented the Convocation Report, highlighting the institute’s achievements in tech transfer, patent filings, and high-quality research publications. He emphasized the institute’s commitment to excellence and innovation, as recognized in various rankings such as NIRF 2023, Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, Nature 2024, and QS World University Rankings 2025.

Dr. Sridhar Vembu, in his Convocation address, encouraged the graduates to embrace challenges and invest in research and development. He emphasized the importance of indigenizing technology and fostering a culture of creativity and resilience.

Prof. Gautam Barua congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to explore diverse areas of interest and deepen their expertise. He highlighted the importance of sustaining the momentum of growth and excellence at IITs.

Future Initiatives

IIT Guwahati is advancing in interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary, and transdisciplinary research and technology development, in line with NEP 2020 policies. The institute is also fostering a start-up culture and promoting entrepreneurship. A significant project, the ‘Digital Nerve Centre,’ is being spearheaded by IIT Guwahati in partnership with the National Health Mission Assam, TATA Medical & Diagnostics, and the Gates Foundation.

Additionally, IIT Guwahati has partnered with the state government to facilitate training and mentoring programs for teachers and students at the school level, encouraging academic excellence in the Northeast region.
