21 Indian Fishermen Return Home from Sri Lanka

21 Indian fishermen have been successfully repatriated from Colombo to Chennai, thanks to the efforts of the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka. The fishermen were released after intervention by the Indian High Commission and the Consulate General in Jaffna.

Additionally, two fishermen were rescued after their boat collided with a Sri Lankan naval vessel, while one died and another is missing. The Indian government has registered a strong protest with Sri Lanka over the incident.

Details of the Incident

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka and the Consulate General in Jaffna secured the release of 20 fishermen. Officials met the fishermen to ensure their well-being and assured their repatriation within a day.

Meanwhile, the Indian Consulate General in Jaffna visited the Kayts police station and met two fishermen, Muthumuniyandu and Mookaiah, whose boat capsized after a collision with a Sri Lankan naval boat. The Consul General, Sai Murali, assured them of all possible support and facilitated phone calls to their families.

Collision Incident

The collision occurred 5 nautical miles north of Katchatheevu Island. Out of the four Indian fishermen on board, one died, another is missing, and two were rescued and brought ashore to Kankesanthurai. The Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi was called to the Ministry of External Affairs, where a strong protest was registered over the death of the Indian fisherman. The search for the missing fisherman is ongoing.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the need to handle fishermen-related issues humanely.
